The Gift

It was her birthday. Rashid counted his leftover weekly pocket allowance. He regretted his illicit greediness over his daily pani pooris. His nine year old’s imagination, allowance and savings were limited.

Heart swelling with affection, he recalled her bright smile, her indulgence towards his whims and her patience over his pranks.

His desperate need to show his love on his mother’s special day led him to the kitchen cupboard. What could he give her?

He painstakingly cut an uneven heart shape on a bread slice and left it on the breakfast table with a childish note – “Dear Mom, Happy Birthday.”

Thanks Rochelle for the story challenge and the photo Prompt.
